Chapter 28
I
t had been three weeks since Ellen had started her new position in London.
So far, she had enjoyed her work even though it had required extensive travelling around and long working hours. Thatâs why she was so happy to see the familiar revolving doors to the St Thomas Hospital at the end of another long day. She had missed the place.
It wasnât only good to be back at her home base of work, but she was also now temporarily staying in hospital accommodation while she found something permanent to rent. It had been a suggestion made by the general manager of the hospital and Ellen had gratefully accepted it. It would give her more time to plan her next step in the London accommodation market, which was tough she had to admit.
She was humming when she entered the main entrance of the hospital and saw Nicola, one of the day managers, taking notes in front of the reception desk. She had made sure to learn at least their first names, so that no one would think her rude. âGood morning Nicola!â she said and waved her hand.
Nicola lifted her gaze from the paperwork, surprised. âHi Miss, I havenât seen you here for a long time, have you been on holiday?â
Ellen shook her head. âNo not at all, I have been visiting other sites for the past two weeks.â
âThatâs great, hopefully we will see you more in this hospital too. How is the accommodation?â
âSo far, so good.â Ellen smiled. âThank you again for organising everything so nicely for me.â
âNo problem Miss, thatâs our job,â Nicola said and nodded her head slightly.
âOf course, in any case, thank you,â Ellen said and hurried down the corridor towards the office.
She didnât get too far before she saw Giuliana, walking towards her. Once she recognised her, Giuliana broke into a wide smile and hurried her step towards her.
Ellen glanced at the rose gold watch around her wrist and sighed; it might take another fifteen minutes to start working.
By now, Ellen had fallen into a routine. She would arrive in the office slightly early to have her morning coffee in peace and to send the most important email correspondence before the morning managers started their shift. Once the other managers arrived, she could barely hear her own thoughts in the office but to make matters worse, Giuliana had decided to take her under her wing and make sure she would feel âwelcomedâ every day by sitting next to her and babbling all day long.
âOh, Ellen it is nice to see you!â Giuliana said and enclosed her in a bear hug.
Ellen stiffened but softened her reaction by patting her hand clumsily on her back. âLikewise, Giuliana,â she said and forced a smile onto her face.
âIt is good to see you again in our hospital. I feel like we havenât seen you for ages,â Giuliana said and grabbed her firmly by her shoulders.
Ellen laughed nervously. The physical affection between friends still made her feel uneasy and uncomfortable.
